Crimea Plunged into Darkness: Infrastructure Collapse and Chaos in the Crown Jewel

Strategic attacks launched by Ukraine in early November effectively brought Crimea’s energy and logistics infrastructure to a standstill. With electricity, internet, and heating completely cut off, approximately 2.5 million people were trapped on the peninsula. Crimea which Russian President Vladimir Putin described as an act of “historical justice” when he annexed it in 2014 is now the scene of a major humanitarian and logistical crisis amid freezing temperatures.

A Fortress Surrendered to Darkness

Widespread power outages that began on the night of November 3 have literally paralyzed life in Crimea. As streetlights went completely dark in the capital, Simferopol, massive apartment blocks were plunged into pitch darkness. In cities like Kerch, where residents receive electricity for only four hours a day, the remaining twenty hours see the city revert to medieval conditions.

Sergei Aksyonov, head of the occupying administration, was forced to appear before the cameras and admit the complexity of the situation. According to Ukrainian intelligence, at the peak of the outages, nearly 1.5 million subscribers were left without electricity, and in some districts, this situation lasted up to ten days. The failure of ATMs to function, along with the closure of banks and grocery stores, caused widespread panic among the public. As school closures were extended, parents found themselves unable to go to work because they had nowhere to leave their children.

Blinding the Bear: The Collapse of Air Defense

This situation, which plunged the peninsula into darkness, was not a simple technical malfunction but the result of a flawless military strategy known as “Blinding the Bear.” In the initial phase, Ukrainian forces aimed to pierce Russia’s shield and, on November 4, destroyed two Pantsir air defense systems worth millions of dollars with precision strikes. With the Gvardeyskoye military airbase also struck that same night, Russia’s air support was paralyzed. Immediately after the defense shield was breached, Ukraine cut off Crimea’s main energy supply lines by striking Russian power lines outside the peninsula and substations in Krasnodar.

Civilians Left Without Water or Fuel

One of the most devastating effects triggered by the power outage occurred in the water supply. When the massive pumps feeding water into the network stopped, only air began flowing from the faucets in Kerch, Sudak, and Yalta. With seawater desalination plants unable to operate due to the power shortage, people took to the streets with containers in hand to stand in lines for water.

Furthermore, with the onset of winter, the Moscow administration canceled its “free propane” program for 13 vulnerable groups. As fuel hit the black market, residents who could not find diesel to run their generators or heat their homes were left at risk of illness.

Logistical Bottleneck and Demographic Exodus

All the logistics routes keeping Crimea alive are collapsing simultaneously. The Kerch Bridge, which opened with great fanfare in 2018, cannot carry heavy military loads due to damaged rails. The ferry routes used as alternatives were struck by Ukrainian drones, and three quarters of their capacity was destroyed. The land route via Rostov, meanwhile, is under constant risk of attack.

In line with the thesis of former U.S. Army Europe Commander Ben Hodges, who described Crimea as a “geography of decisive outcomes,” the bridge, ports, and defense systems have been rendered inoperable. This collapse has led to the mass exodus of hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens who had been settled on the peninsula since 2014. The number of civilians leaving Crimea, accompanied by kilometer-long lines at gas stations, is increasing day by day. Meanwhile, security forces, taking advantage of the darkness, have carried out forced conscription and covert mobilization raids, transforming the public’s anger toward the government into an irreversible hatred.
