Crimea, Putin’s greatest victory in 2014, is today under complete strangulation. A coordinated energy operation launched by Ukraine has plunged the peninsula into darkness, leaving 2.5 million people without electricity, water, or fuel. The Kremlin’s “unsinkable aircraft carrier” has now become an unsustainable and massive burden for the Russian military.
28 Days of Darkness: The Collapse of an Illusion
For years, Crimea was the greatest guarantee of Vladimir Putin’s power and the center of the illusion of invincibility. But today, that guarantee is slipping through his fingers, turning into a struggle for survival. Access to electricity, water, and basic food is now a luxury. The energy crisis, which peaked in July and intensified through the end of September, caused a full twenty-eight days of uninterrupted power outages in regions like Feodosia.
Footage circulating on open sources confirms pitch-black streets and cities humming with the sound of generators. A power outage isn’t just about the lights going out; it means water pumps stop, food supplies rot, and an entire way of life comes to a halt. ATMs went offline, and mobile networks collapsed. This crisis, where even accessing cash became impossible, plunged the public into total panic with 4-hour “fuel windows” tied to liter-based quotas.
“Crimea Switch Off”: A Surgical Energy Cutoff
Behind this chaotic collapse lies not a random stroke of bad luck, but a single, meticulously calculated campaign: the “Crimea Switch Off” operation. Launched in full force on July 6 by the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, the objective of this operation was clear: to destroy the enemy’s electrical infrastructure and plunge the peninsula into darkness.
The largest energy attack the war had seen to that point took place on the night of July 5–6. More than 450 kamikaze drones infiltrated the peninsula by following multi-layered flight paths. As the critical 330-kilowatt substation in Simferopol went up in flames, the entire Crimea turned into a room with the lights turned off overnight. In just two and a half months, a total of 412 energy infrastructure facilities were targeted in the occupied territories and in Russia. Natural gas distribution stations in Orlivka, Bahçesaray, Bilohirsk, and Kholmivka sustained heavy damage. This was a harbinger of the freezing danger to come during the winter months.
The brunt of the operation is being borne by Ukraine’s most elite unmanned systems brigades: the 414th “Birds of Madyar”, the 412th “Nemesis,” the 20th “K-2”, and the 429th “Achilles”. These units are devastating targets hundreds of kilometers behind the front lines with flawless coordination and relentless precision.
Blinding the Bear: How Was the S-400 Shield Broken?
Leaving civilians in the dark is merely a side effect of this operation. The primary strategic objective is to blind Russian air defense systems through power outages, silence massive radars, and turn Crimea into a military graveyard.
The $600 million S-400 systems and high capacity 3D radars like the Nebo-U the backbone of Crimea’s defense shield require an enormous amount of uninterrupted electricity. At fixed bases, this power is drawn from the local civilian grid. Ukraine has shut down precisely this grid. When the grid collapses, the S-400 batteries are forced to switch to their own diesel generators. However, due to a massive fuel crisis caused by the severing of logistics routes in Crimea, those generators are also doomed to fall silent shortly thereafter.
This situation has created deadly blind spots in the layered defense network. Ukraine struck the S-400 batteries, Pantsir systems, and key air bases such as Belbek, Saky, and Hvardiiske in quick succession. Data from the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) confirms that Crimea is now a “permanent loss zone” for the Russians. Russian jets are forced to flee these bases, where they are no longer safe.
Logistical Strangulation and Strategic Isolation
Crimea is connected to the mainland by only a few thin arteries, and these arteries are currently being severed simultaneously. The land corridor stretching from Rostov through Melitopol has now been transformed into a full-fledged “Highway of Death” by the “Medium-Range Strike” campaign. Geolocation data from burning Russian military cargo and fuel tankers proves that cargo traffic has been crushed.
With the land route paralyzed, Russia turned as a last resort to the Sea of Azov that is, its “shadow fleet”. However, Ukraine responded with the “MoLoChKa” (Moscow Will Fall via Crimea) naval operation. Within eleven weeks, the engines and rudders of exactly 300 fuel carrying ships were struck, leaving them immobilized in the middle of the sea. The supply chain through the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait has effectively ground to a halt.
This is precisely the doctrine of General Ben Hodges, the former commander of the U.S. Army in Europe: In the first phase, isolate; in the second phase, render it unsustainable and unusable. The Kerch Bridge has not yet been destroyed because the isolation is already working flawlessly. For now, Ukraine is keeping the bridge open as an escape route to Russia for panicking civilians and the elite who are being held in such fear that they cannot move heavy logistics. The escape lines, stretching up to 15 kilometers with 7,000 vehicles waiting, are the clearest indication that “the rats are abandoning the ship.”
The Burden of the Empire: Crimea’s Final Fate
The demographic engineering project Putin launched in 2014 and carried out over a decade by replacing 35 percent of the population has collapsed. This region, once a symbol of prestige, power, and military invincibility, is now a massive black hole swallowing billions of rubles.
If you cannot provide water, electricity, and fuel to a region where you have stationed a fleet worth billions of dollars, elite units, and hundreds of thousands of loyal citizens, then that region is no longer a testament to your power it is the greatest indicator of your system’s weakness. The helplessness of the civilian population struggling to survive in the dark, combined with sabotage strikes from within by partisan networks like ATESH, is eroding the Kremlin’s stronghold from within. Crimea was once the jewel in the empire’s crown; today, it is a strategic coffin buried in darkness, unrecognized by its allies and slowly wiped out by its enemies.
