The Russian army is undergoing the greatest process of disintegration from within in its modern history. Having suffered more than 160,000 casualties and faced 50,000 desertions in just the first half of 2026 alone, the military structure is on the brink of a total collapse. The system Putin established to prevent surrender has, paradoxically, brought the front to the point of gone.
The Disintegrating Army and the Cascade of Surrenders
The Russian army is disintegrating from within. This collapse is not coming from a front line being breached or a capital falling; it is progressing in a much quieter and more systematic manner. Russian soldiers are now abandoning, one by one, the positions for which they have been giving their lives for four years. Some are retreating, some are abandoning their trenches, and others are raising their hands in surrender as they follow a drone.
The man at the helm of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, is completely helpless in the face of this scene. To halt this STRANGULATION process, he has played every card on the table: high contract bonuses, the threat of imprisonment, Chechen shock troops, and foreign mercenaries. However, all four have backfired spectacularly. While Putin aimed to deter surrender, this action has transformed into a far more intelligent and rational survival strategy than staying on the front lines.
The Drones’ New Mission and the Soldier’s Math
Footage from the field confirms that surrender is no longer an isolated incident but a standard operating procedure (SOP). A Russian soldier crawls out from under a pile of concrete; instead of opening fire, the Ukrainian drone hovering above him drops a water bottle and a note reading “Follow the drone”. A drone pilot from the Skelya Regiment activates the speaker mode to address the target directly from the air: “Drop your weapon, raise your hands, follow the drone.”

The math behind this is brutal. In the first half of 2026, the Russian military lost more than 160,000 soldiers. In this equation where the army is eating its own tail, leaked documents indicate that the number of soldiers who have deserted since the start of the war is approaching 50,000. Cases of desertion and unauthorized absence have exceeded 20,000. When soldiers on the front lines are caught between being shot by their own barrage units and surrendering to Ukrainian drones, they choose to survive.
The Shield Is Being Withdrawn and Logistics Are Collapsing
Ukraine’s deep strikes have forced Russia into a strategic dilemma: Will it defend the front lines, or preserve the perception of invulnerability in Moscow and Crimea? Putin’s choice triggered a chain reaction that has DEVASTATED the front lines. According to Ukrainian intelligence (HUR), air defense systems are being pulled back from the front lines and concentrated in Moscow, at the Kerch Bridge, and at the presidential residences in Valdai.
With this move, the Russian air defense shield has been WIPED OUT. While Russian warplanes had been safely dropping glide bombs from behind their own air defense shield, the withdrawal of the shield nullified this advantage. Seizing this opportunity, Ukraine deployed its own glide bombs and Swedish-made JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to the battlefield.
Furthermore, the lifting of the air umbrella exposed the rear lines to swarms of drones. Convoys carrying fuel, ammunition, and food were BLASTED before reaching their targets. Left defenseless even in their own trenches, cut off from resupply, and with their “front-to-rear” balance collapsed, the unit’s rationale for holding the line completely failed.
Putin’s Four Desperate Measures and the End of the Foreign Legions
The regime made four failed attempts to close this massive manpower gap:
- Money: Contract bonuses were raised to 1 million rubles. However, soldiers chose to take the money and flee; the bonuses became capital for their escape.
- Fear: A 16-year prison sentence was imposed for surrender or desertion. However, soldiers preferred “going to prison rather than dying on the front lines” and attempted to get themselves formally arrested.
- Barrier Units: Chechen units tasked with shooting retreating soldiers did not push the troops back; on the contrary, they ran toward the Ukrainian lines, forcing them to surrender.
- Foreigners: According to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, more than 28,000 foreigners were lured to the front lines with fake job offers. Confessions from African prisoners, such as “They told me this was an employment contract,” document the brutality of the human wave tactic.
Drawing a historical parallel is inevitable. Just as in the collapse of the Tsarist Army in 1917, the stages of moral breakdown, mass desertion, and “merging” with the enemy are rapidly unfolding. The moment a soldier becomes convinced that the opposing side will not kill him, his will to fight is completely DESTROYED.
The Collapse of Will
In April and May 2026, Russia lost far more territory than it gained. This marks the first monthly net territorial loss since 2024. Total casualties since February 2022 have approached 1.5 million, while the death toll has neared the 450,000 mark.
Despite concentrating all its air defense systems around Moscow, the Kremlin is unable to protect the capital; according to reports, the explosion at the Moscow refinery was caused not by a Ukrainian drone, but by a Russian air defense missile that missed its target. The true barometer of war is neither maps nor tank counts; the true barometer is WILL. And the Russian soldiers’ will to continue this war has been CRUSHED under a chain of systematic errors created by their own leadership. The empire is crumbling from within, crushed by its own weight and irrationality.
