The legendary Tu-95MS and Tu-160 fleets the backbone of the Kremlin’s nuclear deterrent have entered an irreversible phase of collapse. Ukraine’s asymmetric drone attacks and industrial sabotage are turning these strategic bombers which Russia will never be able to replace into smoldering piles of scrap.
A GAMBLE IN THE SKIES
Built during the darkest days of the Cold War and a source of terror for NATO for decades, this massive strategic bomber fleet is now desperately searching for a place to hide even deep within its own airspace. On the night of September 8, 2026, in a desperate bid to paralyze Ukraine’s energy infrastructure before the approaching winter, the Kremlin staked its last “crown jewels” on a massive gamble. That night, four Tu-160 supersonic strategic missile carriers and six Tu-95MS bombers took off simultaneously and advanced toward the front lines. However, the command echelon had overlooked a massive strategic blind spot hidden behind technological hubris.
These priceless platforms were forced to enter the lethal range of Ukrainian drones in order to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles each carrying a 400 kilogram warhead capable of penetrating reinforced structures. It was precisely this strategic necessity that threw open the doors to a silent yet devastating process of irreversible decline for Moscow. The undisputed symbols of Russia’s nuclear deterrent had now become open targets.

TARGET: ENGELS-2
The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ genius for asymmetric warfare came into play precisely at this point of vulnerability. The target was the Engels-2 airbase, located deep within Russia and considered an absolutely secure zone for decades. In late August, the elite “Alpha” special operations unit within the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) struck this heavily fortified base right at its heart using an autonomous system that flew approximately 800 kilometers. The MICH-2000 drone used in the operation did not fly directly to the target; instead, it spent hours concealed within the terrain, mapping microscopic gaps in the Russian air defense network.
The target aircraft was the Tu-95MS strategic bomber once a symbol of invincibility due to its massive size. The force of the impact was so great that the aircraft’s right wing was completely severed just behind the second engine and crashed to the ground. Filled with thousands of liters of high octane jet fuel, the wing exponentially amplified the explosion’s effect, and the flames melted the aluminum alloy fuselage within seconds, depriving the aircraft of its primary structural support. This attack was not merely the loss of an aircraft; it was a precision strike directly aimed at the heart of the Russian nuclear triad, reducing the system to a destroyed state.
Satellite images that emerged immediately after the attack laid bare, in all their starkness, how this massive strategic asset had been transformed into a pile of scrap that was economically and technically beyond repair. Furthermore, just six weeks earlier, on July 16–17, another Tu-95MS on the same apron had been targeted by Ukrainian drones, suffering a structural catastrophe in which the tail section was completely severed from the fuselage, extending all the way to the weapons bay.

LOGISTICAL CHOKEPOINT AND ESCAPE
The fact that the Engels-2 airbase considered “untouchable” could be struck so easily twice in such a short period sparked full blown panic in the Kremlin. In desperation, the Russian command decided to evacuate its last remaining crown jewels to the Ukrainka Air Base in the Far East, 6,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. However, this forced evacuation gave rise to one of the most illogical and unsustainable logistical nightmares in the history of military aviation.
For an aircraft believed to be safe in the Far East to launch a Kh-101 missile at Ukraine, it first had to fly 7,000 kilometers to the launch site in the Saratov region, and then cover another 5,400 kilometers to return to its base. A single combat mission lasting 23 hours nonstop in the air is causing fatal structural metal fatigue in these Soviet era aircraft, which are in the twilight of their service lives. Engines are burning out rapidly, and the crew’s workload has reached superhuman levels. The Russian aviation system has come under complete strangulation.
The most ironic part is that, due to the lack of advanced infrastructure at bases in the Far East, these aircraft are forced to land back at the Engels-2 base to be equipped with cruise missiles. Although Russia has begun constructing 17 new reinforced concrete hangars at Engels-2 to counter the drone threat, the process is moving very slowly. As a concrete sign of desperation, fake aircraft silhouettes are being painted on the tarmac, and old car tires are being piled onto the wings of real aircraft. However, Ukraine’s advanced thermal cameras and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems expose these primitive deceptions within seconds.

THE INDUSTRIAL HEART IS STOPPING
Open-source data and UNITED24 reports indicate that the number of Tu-95s destroyed or permanently damaged to date has reached 12. However, the real strategic catastrophe is that production of these turboprop giants, codenamed “Bear,” was halted permanently in 1992. Similarly, production of the supersonic Tu-22M3 bombers also ended in 1993, and more than 70 percent of the existing fleet has been damaged; only 9 to 10 operational aircraft remain. The Russian defense industry is completely incapable of replacing these massive platforms it has lost.
This is precisely why Ukraine’s long range strategy has shifted from merely striking aircraft sitting on the tarmac to targeting the industrial facilities that keep this fleet alive that is, the very heart of the matter. In mid-September 2026, the intense missile and drone attacks on the Beriev aviation plant in the Russian city of Taganrog marked the peak of this strategic attrition campaign. This engineering center where a budget exceeding $200 million had been allocated for the repair of three Tu-95MS aircraft, and where new generation digital flight control systems were being installed in aging airframes was completely devastated.
You can hide a fleet thousands of kilometers away to protect it from asymmetric threats. But if you cannot protect the engineering heart that will perform periodic maintenance on that fleet and replace its aging parts, those priceless aircraft will eventually turn into massive piles of metal rotting on the ground. Russia’s entire long range air strike doctrine has been driven into an inescapable paralysis.
THE COLLAPSE OF THE DOCTRINE
The process we are witnessing today is the very slow, helpless, and irreversible collapse of a military capability propped up by massive budgets and designed to build a global empire of fear in the face of asymmetric intelligence. Strategic bombers, the backbone of nuclear deterrence, are being wiped out one by one.
As the number of aircraft dwindles, the Kremlin’s famed capacity for power projection and nuclear posturing not only against Ukraine but, in essence, against NATO is also gone. In this gamble he undertook during the winter months to cripple Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Putin is losing his last crown jewels. The era of strategic aviation has come to a close for Russia, buried beneath a dark wreckage and shrouded in immense helplessness.
