Sweden’s Gripen Blow: How Did Putin’s Air Superiority Collapse?

Putin’s entire southern war plan relied on absolute air superiority, but Sweden’s historic deployment of the JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets COLLAPSED that illusion in a single stroke. Equipped with MBDA Meteor ramjet-powered missiles and bunker-busting Storm Shadow missiles, these highway hunters are poised to systematically dismantle Russia’s deepest bunkers.

A Deadly Siege from Crimea to Donbas

For months, Russia has been attempting to break Kiev’s resistance by striking Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and energy lines from the air. However, the historic announcement made on May 28 at Uppsala Air Base shook the Kremlin’s war machine to its core. Sweden and Ukraine have signed the largest single Western fighter jet commitment since the start of the war: 36 JAS 39 Gripen aircraft. This is not merely an air defense reinforcement; it marks the deployment of a versatile attack platform capable of striking from 200 kilometers away, taking off from highways, and placing Putin’s Crimea-Donbas line under STRANGULATION.

Sweden’s decision to donate 16 Gripen C-D models and sell 20 E models to Ukraine using an EU loan possesses the capacity to WIPED OUT (eliminate) Russia’s three key advantages based on air superiority range, base dependency, and deep strike capability one by one.

MBDA Meteor: High-Altitude Invulnerability Is Coming to an End

The Gripen’s true lethal power stems not from the aircraft itself, but from the MBDA Meteor missile it carries. While Ukraine’s F-16s currently use AMRAAM missiles with a range of 100–160 km, the Meteor shifts this balance to 150–200 km, working against Russia. The Meteor uses a ramjet engine that draws in air to generate continuous thrust, rather than conventional rocket engines. By approaching the target at a speed of 1.5 kilometers per second, it creates a massive kill zone where escape is impossible.

This means that Russian Su-34 bombers or Su-35 fighters attempting to approach the front line will be shot down before they even see the Gripen.

On September 19, 2025, Swedish Air Force Gripen fighters personally intercepted three Russian MiG-31s that had violated Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island. The high-altitude shield of these MiG-31s, which cannot maneuver at 80,000 feet and Mach 2.8, has now been officially DESTROYED by Meteor missiles.

The “Strike 90” Doctrine and Asymmetric Deep Strike

Putin’s second major strategy was to strike Ukrainian aircraft while they were on the ground at fixed airfields. However, the Gripen was designed by the Swedish Air Force in the 1980s specifically to render the Soviets’ airfield-strike strategy obsolete through the “Bas 90 doctrine”. The aircraft can take off from an ordinary 800-meter highway, refuel at the edge of a forest using equipment that fits into a single vehicle, and be airborne again within 10 minutes. While F-16s are sitting ducks, Gripens blind Russian intelligence.

Furthermore, these highway fighters can carry two Storm Shadow cruise missiles, enabling them to perform both air defense and strike missions against Russia’s underground command centers hundreds of kilometers deep. The fact that an aircraft whose origin is unknown can carry a 450-kilogram two-stage bunker-buster warhead is a cause for PANIC (panic) for the Kremlin.

Logistical Lifelines Are Being Severed

Just before the Gripen announcement, on May 27, Ukraine struck the Black Sea Fleet Air Force Headquarters in Sevastopol, the Baltimor military airfield in Voronezh, and the aircraft repair plant in Taganrog with Storm Shadow missiles all in the same night. With the Gripens entering the fray, this strike zone is expanding dramatically. The railway junctions and fuel depots along the Zaporizhzhia-Mariupol line connecting Crimea to the mainland are now directly within range.

If this corridor is cut off, the garrison in Crimea will be left completely defenseless. When the trio of F-16s, Mirage 2000s, and Gripens hits the ground; different radar signatures, different deployment strategies, and different weapon sets will simultaneously overwhelm Russian air defense systems (S-400), CRUSHING them. No matter which front Moscow tries to defend, it will face a systemic collapse. This aircraft deal is not merely a weapons upgrade; it is a tectonic shift in doctrine declaring that the war has come home.
