Vladimir Putin’s strategy to intimidate the civilian population has turned into a deadly boomerang, financed directly from the Kremlin’s own coffers. On August 21, Russian drones that struck Krivyi Rih triggered a historic defense industry revolution in Paris that completely severed Moscow’s logistical lifeline.
A CHAIN REACTION TRIGGERED BY CIVILIAN TERROR
Russia calculated that it could bring Kyiv to its knees by following the doctrine of striking civilian targets, which it has employed since the start of the war. On August 21, two Russian drones that made successive dives directly into the Solnechnaya Galereya shopping center which was packed with civilians once again played the most ruthless card in the Kremlin’s tactical arsenal. However, rather than securing a victory on the front lines, this attack triggered a chain reaction hundreds of kilometers away, in every European capital, setting in motion Moscow’s process of strangulation.
The very next day after the attack, French President Emmanuel Macron’s two-hour phone call with Zelenskyy was not merely a routine diplomatic contact, but the announcement of a new European air defense doctrine. The massive $7.15 billion military budget simultaneously approved by the European Union not only filled the void left by the United States but also set in motion the transformation of Ukraine into an independent war machine capable of producing its own weapons.
TECHNOLOGICAL ASYMMETRY WITH ASTER-30 AND AASM HAMMER
As stocks of the American made Patriot systems Ukraine’s sole shield against Russia’s high-speed ballistic missiles rapidly dwindle, Europe has deployed its own continental engineering to the field. The SAMP/T air defense systems and Aster-30 interceptor missiles pledged by France are designed to shut down Russian air attacks. Capable of destroying targets within a 150-kilometer range at speeds exceeding 5,000 kilometers per hour, the Aster-30 instantly incinerates Russia’s cruise missiles and drone swarms.
Europe’s technological asymmetry initiative did not stop there. Germany deepened its defense network by signing an agreement to procure 600 PAC-2 missiles, scheduled for delivery by 2027–2028. However, the real revolution on the battlefield lay hidden in another technology descending from the sky to the ground: the AASM Hammer guided bombs produced by the French company Safran.
This system transforms ordinary, unguided munitions into a high-precision killing machine with a range of up to 140 kilometers, equipped with a nose unit and tail fins. Ukrainian forces have systematically wiped out Russian command centers, artillery batteries, and critical logistics depots using these bombs fired from MiG-29 and Mirage-2000 fighter jets.
SUPPLY CHAIN CUT OFF, PRODUCTION BEGAN
In June 2026, France, in an unprecedented decision in its history, authorized the licensed production of its own weapons on Ukrainian soil. Aster-30 missiles, SCALP cruise missiles, and AASM Hammer bombs would no longer be expected solely from the West; they would roll off assembly lines directly under Kyiv’s control. The United Kingdom’s decision to share critical engineering blueprints for its Storm Shadow missiles with Ukraine sent Moscow’s panic levels soaring.

Russian forces, whose logistics lines are constantly under attack, have been forced to spread their air defenses over a wide area due to Ukrainian jets striking from safe distances, thereby shattering their artillery superiority on the front lines.
THE KREMLIN FINANCING ITS OWN COLLAPSE
The bill for all these billions of dollars’ worth of advanced weapons is being sent directly to Russia itself through one of history’s greatest geo economic traps. The massive interest income generated by the approximately $300 billion in Russian Central Bank assets frozen by the West (via the ERA mechanism) is being channeled directly into Ukraine’s armament. The returns on the 185 billion euros held in Euroclear are being used to purchase AASM Hammer bombs, which equip Ukraine’s Mirage-2000s.
The Kremlin is paying the price for the invasion it launched with its own frozen wealth. As Russia’s resources dwindle, Putin’s dependence on his new network of allies North Korea and Iran is growing.
The 150 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles and 8,500 personnel (400 of whom are drone operators) that North Korea has sent to Russia are absolute proof of Moscow’s exhaustion. According to intelligence reports, the possibility of this troop count rising to as many as 50,000 remains on the table.
THE COLLAPSE OF THE ILLUSION AND EXHAUSTION
Russia, which imports soldiers, bullets, and missiles from abroad, is a country where the illusion of superpower status has completely collapsed. While the Iran-North Korea axis produces weapons quickly but primitively, the West’s high-quality defense industry and Ukraine’s push for local production are irreversibly shifting the balance in this long-term war of attrition.
This new integrated air defense shield established by Europe does more than just protect the skies; it is eroding Moscow’s diplomatic and economic resilience day by day. Military superiority the Kremlin’s greatest promise has been shattered. There is no safe place, and Russia’s own wealth is pulling the pin on the ammunition that will bring about its own demise.
