Putin’s illusion of a swift victory in Donbas has been DESTROYED. Russia’s massive offensive launched to break through the “Fortress Belt” has COLLAPSED in the face of Ukraine’s lethal unmanned systems and elite infantry units. The reality on the ground paints a picture of total PANIC for the Kremlin.
The Failure of the Opening Move
In late May, Russia launched a major mechanized assault via Lyman to capture the 50-kilometer-long “Fortress Belt” comprising Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and Kostyantynivka which forms the strategic heart of Ukraine-controlled Donetsk. According to President Zelenskyy’s data, 170,000 military personnel a force larger than most European armies were concentrated along this axis.
However, this massive force failed to achieve the expected progress. The Ukrainian army WIPED OUT Russian mechanized groups comprising 28 motorcycles, 50 infantrymen, 1 tank, and various armored vehicles (BMPs) before they could even reach the first line of defense. Data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) the most respected analytical institution on the war confirms that Russia has made no significant progress along the Lyman axis, and its offensive strategy has been fundamentally shaken.

Infiltration and Tactical Grinding
The Russian command, CRUSHED in Lyman, was forced to shift its main center of gravity to Kostyantynivka. However, this siege attempt, which has been ongoing since August 2025, has turned into a meat grinder for the Russian army. ISW analyses reveal that 11,000 Russian soldiers have been concentrated in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area, but as 19th Corps Commander Bakulin himself admitted, only about 123 soldiers managed to infiltrate the city.
Attacks on the city are being carried out not by massed mechanized units, but by isolated infantry infiltrations sent every six to seven hours. This line, held by some of the war’s most experienced units such as Ukraine’s 95th Airborne Brigade has effectively left Russian forces TRAPPED. According to ISW data, Russia lost a net total of approximately 50 square kilometers of territory between May 26 and June 23.

Azov’s Deadly Formula
One of the chief architects of this strategic stalemate is the 12th Special Forces Brigade “Azov,” under the command of General Prokopenko. In August 2025, when Russia opened a breach 15–23 kilometers deep in the direction of Dobropillia, the Azov Corps was deployed to the area and HALTED the Russian advance.
Azov’s tactical doctrine, which it calls “front first”, worked flawlessly: allow the Russian mechanized advance to penetrate deep, hold the line with small drone groups, and then cut off the enemy’s logistics from the rear to eliminate the trapped units. As a result of this strategy, more than 50 Russian soldiers surrounded in the village of Kucheriv Yar were taken prisoner; the unit neutralized 151 Russian soldiers and captured 18 prisoners in just two days. NATO has even begun integrating this new asymmetric warfare doctrine into its own forces.
Logistical Strangulation and the Invisible Front
The Kremlin’s true collapse is not taking place on the front lines, but in Horlivka the logistical lifeline located 35–40 kilometers behind the front. Since 2022, this city the main artery of the Russian army in Donetsk has been subjected to complete STRANGULATION by Ukraine’s medium-range drone warfare.
The drone unit of Ukraine’s 28th Brigade sums up the situation in a single sentence: “Everything entering Horlivka trucks, cars, ATVs is burning there.” Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces have paralyzed the Russian army’s nervous system by destroying precision fuel tankers 29 kilometers behind the front lines using FPV drones. Drone fire control set up at river crossings is DEVASTATING (DESTROYING) reinforcing units before they even reach the front lines. It is physically impossible for an army with its logistical lifelines severed to advance.

Strategic Conclusion and the Thirsty Empire
Putin’s ambition to conquer Donetsk has turned into a massive humanitarian and strategic crisis in the territories he himself has occupied. With the destruction of the Siverskyi Donets–Donbas Canal during the war, water can be supplied to the occupied city of Donetsk only once every three days, and to Mariupol only once every two days. Russia’s provision of mine water contaminated with heavy metals to the public proves the GONE (EXTINCTION) of state capacity.
Reports from the independent OSINT platform DeepState drive the harsh reality home: Russia’s monthly territorial gains have turned negative for the first time since 2023. Having suffered 1.2 million casualties over four years for 12% of Ukraine’s territory, Russia is now losing far more people than it can replace. This is not an offensive; it is an irreversible moment of exhaustion and CHAOS (CHAOS), where an empire is drowning in its own blood on the front lines. The Fortress Belt has not been breached; the Russian war machine attempting to break it has shattered under its own weight.
